Forest vs. Birmingham City preview..

It’s official, Forest cannot conspire to ruin your Saturday this weekend.  Admittedly your Sunday might take a turn for the worst, because that’s when the game is – a 3pm kick off, so don’t get caught out.  This is, of course, to accommodate Birmingham’s participation in the Europa League this season.  Can I honesty say I’m looking forward to resuming the City Ground pilgrimage? Not really.

After a shameful performance midweek at Burnley, and the subsequent sacking-of-man-not-employed-then-offering-him-a-job bemusement surrounding David Pleat, also gone from the backroom is reportedly unpopular Bill Beswick.  So on the one hand McClaren appears to be being backed by the so-called removal of a man who hasn’t been active at Forest for months, on the other hand he’s had a trusted ally taken from him.

Tricky times for the manager, that is for sure.  Another failure to win at the City Ground won’t prove popular, with protests already mooted in some circles for before the game, it will be interesting to gauge the fans as they muster around the ground – it’s difficult to do so purely online.

Anyway, I digress.  Birmingham.  Managed by Chris Hughton, who certainly showed a degree of elan last time he managed a newly relegated team in this league – but he too has enjoyed an inauspicious start to the season in league terms – like us, just two league wins so far for the Blues, which puts them also on 8 points, like us, but with a positive swing of seven goals on the old goal difference.

No new injuries for Steve to worry about, but well, he should damn well be looking to go for something rather different to our last outing.  Whether he actually shows some nerve and considers whether the form of seemingly immovables Messrs Greening and Chambers really justify a starting berth, or whether he continues to go by habit well, it remains to be seen.

Personally, I’d be tempted to drop Chambers (no offence, Luke) and go for a back four with Hill at centre half and Lynch at left back.  Or possibly switch the left siders – not sure.  Moussi and Radi in midfield – then we have a problem, no fit wingers.  Maybe he could consider Lewis in there as well, then going for the three up top with Miller, Derbyshire and Findley.

As I start to tinker, it does make me realise it’s a tricky prospect.  It’s also quite easy to make decisions on paper safe in the knowledge that they’re not ever likely to be tested properly.  We are still without Anderson, Boateng, McCleary, Blackstock and of course Cohen.  Birmingham have doubts over Stephen Carr and Curtis, both of whom have knee injuries.

So, predictions are always tricky – it’s difficult to see Birmingham coming for an all-out-attack, but then again, maybe they’d see flailing Forest as the perfect opportunity for a kick-start.  Certainly I do expect to see pockets of discontent from the fans before and possibly during the game, the numbers involved will be really interesting as a proper barometer for the mood.

Basically, a win would make everyone’s life a hell of a lot easier.  I wouldn’t bet on it, though.

  1. The bookies seem to have Forest as the favourites, about 11/10 whereas the blues are as wide as 5/2. It’s 9/4 the draw with Bet365.

  2. ….PACK EM IN THE MAINSTAND CAR PARK ..THE MEDIA WILL BE THERE IN DROVES …THIS IS OUR CHANCE TO BE HEARD …15 MINS PRIOR TO KICK OFF…..LETS NOT ….LOSE OUR LOVING FEELING !!!..UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUREEEEEEEEDS !!!

  3. Sunday will be when we see whether “doing something radical” meant the squad or just the backroom and upstairs.

    Radical could be:
    1. Smith for Camp between the sticks
    2. Maloney for Gunter.
    3. Lynch for Morgan,
    4. Hill at left back (not radical to play a left back at left back, but it seems to be for Forest)
    5. Only 1 holding midfielder (Greening, but Radi not Moussi)
    6. Drop Tubby for McGugan (and drop him from the bench too)
    7. Stick with Miller, Findley Derbyshire up top, but sub Miller for Tudgay at the first sign of a sulk.
8, Freeman and Bamford on the bench – and actually use them.

Interesting to see how many (if any) of these get done. 2 or less and Schteve is no radical.

  4. I agree regarding dropping Chambers and Greening !
Chambers is having a nightmare season and should certainly be dropped !
If he appears as captain on sunday, then Steve can leave now ! ,being absolutely clueless !!!!Mcgugan HAS to start !!Gunter,Morgan ,Lynch and Hill the back four !!! PLEASE !!!

  5. we could save the club a fortune …..just have a fans commitee to pick the squad ……………at least WE KNOW WHAT WERE DOIN !!!! UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUREEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDSSSSSSSSSSS !!

  6. Yea I agree chambers should be dropped and greening plus reid all passengers. We dont have the players at the moment for Shteves systems of play its 4,4,2 for me all the way.

    Camp

    Moloney Wes Hilll Lynch

    Findley Radi Moose Google

    Miller Derbyshire

Findley for pace moose sitting in radi to create and feed the forwards google cutting in and firing balls into miller.Derbyshire getting in behind and to stretch the back four.

I also think the signings Mclaren has made have been very poor apart from the 2 lads up front.

Brum will come and have a right go they will try and get the first goal to get the crowd on the players back it s time for men to step up to the challenge .

    Forest til i die ……..

  7. Just heard Arthur’s interview on Radio Nottingham, he said that he intends to go about his job in the same way he has done for the past 12 years – WELLTHAT’S GONE BRILLIANTLY HASN’T IT?!

    GOD HELP US!!!

  8. […] the original post on Through the seasons before […]

  9. Arthur should be packing his bags !
What a nerve going on the radio..A good protest for the cameras re. Arthur is needed !
Thrown out of Notts and now destroying Forest !!
We need a football man in who really cares about the club and the fans !!
I like your team red ric !
We certainly know our players better than the current manager. Incredible.
.At least the teams below us lost so we escape the relegation zone for another week !
With arthur’s comments, does that mean he will sack Steve as he did Billy,if Steve’s comments upset him ??

  10. If your unsure whether you should vocalise your dissatisfaction of the last 12 years then listen to Arthur’s latest interview on Radio Nottingham. He seems unable to tell the truth and drifts between self-pity and arrogance. Come on you apathetic Red’s fans get in the Main Stand Car-Park and make some noise!!!

  11. ” NO COMMENT”

  12. -We all said chambers should be dropped due to his poor form this season !! He gave away another goal !! Why is he playing ???? Mclaren has to do the decent thing for our club and resign together with Mark arthur.
Doughty HAS to put the club up for sale and in the meantime look for a new manager.
There must be another Nigel Atkins somewhere who is totally positive,
.No good manager will come while Mark Arthur remains, thats sure. Bring back Pembo,Caretaker until the end of the season !!!

  13. he resigned then

  14. So Steves gone,Arthur is hanging on by the skin of his teeth and Doughty ,at Last is putting Forest up for sale !! Brilliant !!
The problem now is Doughty is staying until the end of the season and the dreaded Arthur, non football man is still here…so who is going to choose our new manager ??
Billy won’t come back, Pembo maybe not enough experience, but would motivate our boys,
So Pembo as assistant to who ??????????

  15. STEVES GONE!!!! SO’S NIGEL!!!! WAYHAAY!!!

At last we can get rebuild the way we need to.

  16. So everyone is cheering now SMC and ND stepped down.
    You know what? I’m not.
For the first time since I’ve joined this forum, I’m not optimistic.
    I’m seriously worried.
Now I’m almost sure we’re bound for relegation.
But Forest til I die. Always.
My thanks to all “protesters” who helped create this mess. I hope you have enough money to run a football club, I don’t.
    Goodnight Forest.

  17. Vassilis. The protesters didn’t create the mess. The mess was created by the constant mis management of the club. ND has tried to do the right thing but the club has been so badly run for the last 12 years its all coming to a head. There has been no stability on the playing field and the moment a manager creates a decent team its dismantled and we’re back to shit again. The reason we are in the mess is down to the running of the club which all rests on ND’s decisions. The day to day running of the club is MA’s job and he is someone ND has stuck behind yet the club can’t even manage to run the match day refreshments properly. Whose fault is that? If you run a company and the people you employ constantly under perform do you keep them around to run your company even further into the ground?

The fans have had enough and while some may be misguided this has got to be is some part down to the lack of information from the club. Again another aspect that is poorly managed. Fans don’t need to know every conversation held in the boardroom but they do need to be kept in the loop regarding decisions that will affect the future of the club. Football is a community business and its important for Forest to keep their community happy and not take them for granted. But the fans haven’t just been taken for granted they have been cheated. Cheated out of their money and cheated out of success by ludicrously bad decisions. Any other business and this current regime would of been gone 5 years ago at least, voted out down to no confidence.

Having all the money in the world is useless if you can’t utilise it correctly. ND has basically wasted his time and money and not learnt anything. Can you guarantee that the club would of folded if he didn’t come in? No. And we don’t know what is going to happen when he goes. But the regime has to change because it simply does not work, we have 12 years of proof.

  18. Don’t worry Vassilis ! We may not go up this year, but i’m sure we won’t go down !
We still have a better squad than most teams in the championship, and all we need is good man management and a positive motivator !
A couple of wins, and up we go up the table !!!

  19. Blatantly obvious that ND will not be putting any more money into the club. Going from a heavy loss postion financed by ND to break-even means lower league players. Who’s going to buy something where they have to pay off or partly pay off the debt before you start on the “re-build”. Who’s buying anything at the moment?

Vassils … spot on, this is just the beginning.
