In between all the tittle-tattling over Peter Whittingham and Darren Pratley, it’s easy to forget we’ve got a match tonight. It had half-slipped my mind hence the lateness of the preview! A bit of deja vu once again pits us against Bradford City in the league cup, and to be honest, given the fragility of our squad at the moment, it’s a game we could do without!
With Earnie, Gunts, Moloney, Bertie and Raddy all unavailable due to international duty, and with Kelv and McKenna facing late fitness tests it leaves the Reds rather thin on the ground to say the least. So Billy’s talk of ‘blooding’ youngsters really is probably out of necessity rather than choice – however, it is a good opportunity for him to get a look at them in first team action as they might be needed as the season goes on!
Our hosts have adedd a fair number of players to their squad over the summer months, so will be more of an unknown quantity for Billy to ponder over – certainly Taylor’s aim at the helm of the Bantams will be to steer them to promotion, but providing a cup upset or two along the way will certainly not be seen as any bad thing in those preparations!
It does pain me how devalued the League Cup has become – obviously a staple trophy in Forest’s history – but to be honest, whilst of course I’d like us to win, I’m more concerned about avoiding further injuries and getting a bit more match practice in preparation for the visit of Leeds on Sunday.
Both the Reds and the Bantams lost their opening league fixtures against Burnley and Shrewsbury respectively, so will be eager to make amends and get a first win under their belts. I would hope that even a weakened Reds side should have enough in the tank to see off Bradford, but – well – we all know what can happen if we’re over-confident!
