We sign Cole, I’m a merry old soul..

It’s a pretty ill-kept secret that we were in talks with Andy (or Andrew) Cole; Smoulds himself confirmed as much unusually prior to announcing a signing, so I was pretty confident it was going to happen sooner or later, as he’s usually very reticent to name names – even when the rumours point strongly to a particular target – so it wasn’t a surprise, but nonetheless a pleasant announcement.

A local lad, Cole needs to introduction to football fans at all – he shot to prominence when banging in goals during Newcastle’s rise to the top flight, in a career that started at Arsenal before a premature move to Bristol City; almost a goal every other game saw the Geordies snap him up for just shy of £2million.  In 70 appearances for the Toon Army he banged in an amazing 55 goals.

In 1995 he moved to Manchester United for a then British record transfer fee, and was a key figure in their treble-winning side of 1999.  After this halcyon period he went on a journeyman phase taking in Blackburn, Fulham, Manchester City, Portsmouth and latterly Sunderland, who released him this summer enabling us to pick him up for a free transfer.  Last season he was loaned to Burnley where he bagged 6 goals in 13 games.

Certainly at 36 years of age, it is undeniable that we won’t be seeing a player at his peak, very much in the autumn of his playing career – but nonetheless, we have acquired a bona fide pedigree striker, and what he can’t produce on the field any further could easily be compensated for in the influence he can have on our other strikers on the training ground.

So welcome on board, Andrew.  I’m pretty excited about the prospect of seeing him in a Forest shirt; whilst perhaps not expecting him to play in all our games, I’m confident that provided with the right ammunition there’s no reason why he won’t be able to continue his knack of being in the right place at the right time to bag a few goals for us next season, and hopefully provide invaluable advice to his fellow strikers as the season goes on.

To switch from our latest incoming to one of our outgoings, Kris Commons has finally spoken in public about his move to the evil place; indeed, aside from coming across as a bit dim, and attempting to drop his north Notts accent, he has also provided an insightful prediction that Jewell’s men are set for a disastrous time next season (silly boy!).  I still think he’ll have a convenient injury when it comes to his new team’s visit to the City Ground.

  1. Best news I have heard in a long time, though to be fair Earnshaw, Anderson and Moussi weren’t that bad, plus losing Agogo, Holt and wantaway Commons, not a bad piece of business from our manager. Two strikers, one attacking and one defensive midfielder in to replace exactly the exact same and possibly worse that have left (though the jury will stay out on Moussi until I have seen him play). I dare say Cole won’t be up for every game of the season and lets hope another Lennon facade does not repeat itself, but all in all great news. Cole and Earnie, a possibly formidable strike force, lets hope so.

  2. Good news, yes not in his prime but with a good pre-season I would take a ratio like he had at Burnley of circa 0.5 goals per game.

Welcome Andrew Cole, I am still looking foward to 3 up front, Earnshaw, Tyson and Cole, being supplied by Anderson and Moussi, and lets not forget Davis, with a bit of luck and no injuries we may have the start of a great team.

    Can’t wait……………………………………….

  3. hahaha Common’s interview. Choked on his reply, didn’t he? “Disastrous season next year” good to see that he’s realised that. Hilarity. Can’t wait to see Cole in our Red.

  4. I’d love to see Moussi against Cole in training !! I’m feeling better now !!Come on you REDS !www.alansand.ws

  5. What a signing now it’s finalised. Andrew Cole, what a name, what an extinguished career he’s had 2. CC does come up with the goods at times. For now, u’re forgiven but that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook yet. 1 of the 2 criterias have been met so that’s ok.

When the season starts & the teams jelled a bit more then the critics will return either bad or good. Well done to the backroom board too even though some of those wages are from departing players.

Agogo, if u’ve gone (most likley yes) then what a chance you’ve missed. Tyson, what a chance for you to play with such a great strker. Judas, stuff u, we got Cole so join the Rams fast train to Div1:lol: & don’t come back.

Word of warning Andrew – not that u need it – don’t take your place for granted, Lennon did & got a shock for it & ran off around 6 months. There’s some good kids in the reserves (at least CC took them too 2 Bath) & we let go of 2 U-21’s as well. That shows how good they are. Stick around, you’re a local lad & not many people get a chance to play for their home team. The younger players will look up to you big time especialy since your local.

Al the best Andrew & can’t wait to see you in action.

Finally, CC, well done again but there’s still things to be done.

  6. Hi guys, glad to see that the atmosphere has changed!!! After all, “he” might know what he’s doing (lol)
Very good signings indeed, don’t be surprised is Moussi is the hit of the season! As for Cole, just look at what Windass has done with Hull at almost 40! Scoring is an art you never forget isnt it?
Congratulations CC, now after getting Garner’s deal in black and white it’s time for a second goalie and maybe a creative midfielder.
I can’t wait for the opener v Reading and might be there too!!!

  7. I just hope Mr Cole has some fire left in his belly for what will be one hell of a fight next season.

Excellent link NFFC to Sheep Sh*gging Commons and his stuttering interview.

I think back to Mr Collymore’s reception at the CG, and hope we can turn the volume up EVEN more for him, the fat ugly pie eating b*stard!

Not that Im bitter and twisted of course! 🙂

  8. I saw this quote on Teamtalk website and I thought the final line was fantastic………….

i miss those times when nottingham forest, liverpool and manure were the main title contenders…not crappy chelski… come on forest, take some of our highest rated young guns…but be back in the premier league… remember this… champions never die!!!

  9. Vas & all the rest – stop talking of goalies – what r we going to do, sign him on a year loan whilt sending out our 3 youngster goalies? Riddiculous if your asking me. The best thing in my opinion is send them 1 @ a time out on loan means two still at the clu any 1 time. 1 on the bench & to use in Cup games to gain vital experience & 1 in the reserves for match fitness. Rotation between the 3 & money saved @ the same time.

  10. One thing andy cole is great at is holding up the ball there is method behind the madness at forest COME ON YOU REDS

  11. Welcome on board Andrew Cole. It’s great to get some old fashioned local passion into this. I dont think he’d be feeling the same if he signed for burnley!!

I hope Cole can show leadership skills and some “balls” on the field!
