It’s nil points for Leeds United..

The appeal for the fifteen points saga has come to an end today, with the arbitration panel announcing just moments ago that Leeds United will not regain any of the fifteen points deducted this season.  On a purely selfish level, this is a relief to me as it keeps our hopes of automatic promotion alive – as before when I’ve discussed this (except when it happened), I’m not going to get into the whys, wherefores and justification, because frankly, I don’t understand it enough.

It will be of bitter disappointment to Leeds fans, who several I’ve spoken to over recent weeks and were hopeful of a return of some if not all of their points.  Of course, Leeds still have the opportunity to attain promotion thanks to the points they’ve amassed this season – were it not for the deduction they would be in second place now, just a point behind Swansea with the opportunity of nicking the title at the weekend.

Whilst I was fearful of the potential announcement, I’m not surprised at it – the Football League would have opened up the floodgates potentially of other appeals – and whilst I would argue they have been made to look somewhat foolish by this entire process, it would have shown them up to be a very weak organisation if they had relented so late in the season.  Not to mention the legal actions that Carlisle and Doncaster had already spoken of launching should all the points be returned.

Forest remained conspicuously silent over the whole affair – and I think this was the most appropriate way to deal with it.  There is little point in fretting and bitching in the press about a decision that is out of our hands, it is much more prudent to concentrate on things within our control – ie, our own games.  So I think the club are to be congratulated on their restraint on commenting upon an issue that must have been concerning them.

This does offer an extra motivation for nicking that automatic promotion spot – I wouldn’t fancy facing Leeds in the playoffs.  Whilst it’s impossible to quantify, having witnessed (from afar) the manner in which the original deduction was leveraged to unite the board, management, players and fans to a fantastic start from the season, I can foresee a rage-fuelled Leeds having – in their eyes – suffered another injustice, being strong contenders for promotion through the playoff lottery.

It’s still game on this saturday for us, currently Leeds are in sixth and we’re in third – which would mean should things stay the same we’d meet in the semi-finals of the playoffs.  So all the more we must overcome Yeovil and hope that Cheltenham can confound Donny this weekend…

  1. I don’t have any regrets at all about Leeds “being denied” “their” points, neither do I share your concern about potentially facing them in the play-offs. In the beginning of the season, when they were riding high recording only wins, they beat us in the CG by a late goal in a game where they did NOT play better than us. Then at Elland Road it took a debatable (AND late, of course!) penalty for them to equalise and steal another two points away from us. If we now had the CG point we would have had our fate in our hands Saturday, if we had all three points they took away from us just a draw against Yeovil would have been enough. So no hard feelings at all, they had to pay and they did. I’m not sure they luck they rode almost all season longs (how many goals did they score after 85 mins???) will still accompany them in the play-offs. So good luck against them Donny, hope you go to Wembley again like you did last season, and with the same success! I will certainly root for you to join us in the Championship!

  2. whooooo!!!! so glad leeds didnt get there points back now we can go into the yeovil game knowing if we win we could be assured of a place in the championship come on u reds!!!!!

  3. I do feel for the Leeds fans who have been through so much this season and I hope they do succeed in the play offs as long as we make second place on saturday. does anyone else feel nervously sick whenever anyone mentions saturday???

  4. Nervously sick – for the heady heights of The Championship?

Well, it’s up to Donny really, as we should do just fine.

  5. At the end of last season, just remember that Leeds were almost down anyway, despite that 10 point reduction. The fans had turned on the players, manager, and Bates. Then, following certain discrepancies by the club which I admit I didnt understand, they were deducted 15 points at the start of this season. Which I understand Bates signed an agreement not to contest, therefore I would suggest admitting guilt.
Suddenly Leeds had no players, couldnt sign anyone and were in turmoil.
So the obvious happened; backs to the wall mentality, get a lucky win against Forest, their fans to their credit turned out in the thousands and bang they went on a roll. So obviously Bates decided to appeal.
I sort of feel sorry for the fans of Leeds United. They have had to suffer this dreadful division like us. And they have also seen a good side with a proud(ish!) history ridiculed.
But I am a Forest fan and only want what is right for us. If Leeds also go up (assuming we do), then fair play.
Right now all I hope is our players are not as nervous as I am at the moment!

  6. I also sort of feel sorry for Leeds fans, and there has been some decent contributions from a couple of them on this website.

However i’m sure the majority are nothing special, so i’m glad they didn’t get their points back! And i’m looking forward to getting revenge over them for the points they mugged us for over the season.

  7. Mattyboy – Dont feel too sorry for Leeds as they have only had to suffer this division for one season so far. 3 seasons for us is long enough and I for one just can’t cope with the thought of suffering another one. Come on Cheltenham!!!!!!!!

Can anyone recommend a pre-match pub where I can take a 10 year old in to watch the lunchtime match on saturday? Ta.

  8. Reds unite, I will do whatever I can 2 have a radio which can pick up BFBS 2 (which will have 5 live on it) or else I’ll be bombarding my cousins in Nottingham for updates!!! Every 5 mins or less!!! (except HT of course!!). Nervous, I will be tommorow from 5pm (3 your time). It couldn’t be crazier top or bottom!!

As for Leeds, Bates should retire from football as all he does is complain things are against him. I don’t know of anybody else crying out for injustice. They tried to cheat their way by taking 10 point deduction last season when they knew they were down & out bar an amazing comeback & came out of administration to their own rules (from what I understand, correct me if I’m wrong) then @ 1st accepted the terms to enter the league then refuse them saying that they were forced to sign it…. Well, what’s the real truth? Why did u take the reduction at the end of the season & not during the summer? Exactly, you’ve seen what this league’s done to us & knew that if you took those points then, you wouldn’t loose them this season so you could get out @ the 1st attempt.

You still can & should you do it, all credit to the players who despite loosing their manager to Newcastle (I think I remember right), still have a chance to go straight up. If any of the Leeds fans are reading this, don’t underestimate any of the other 3 teams in the PO especially if you face us in the semis….

Saturday afternoon all will be revealed.

Sidenote – I hope Mansfield solve thei problems off field & can get back into the Football League next season, Notts County beating Wycombe was their ticket to stay up. Come on Burton, win the PO & join the FL this time. Come on Cloughie.

  9. Aylesbury Red – The supporters club bar is child friendly. It costs £1 for non-members. It is called the boat club and is behind the Trent End. It has sky and always has the lunch time match on.

  10. Yiannaki, no need to blow up your phone bill, you can follow the game thru internet with a very slight delay (2 mins or so) and also see what’s happening in the other games with automatic updates in the two addresses below:

That’s what I’ve been doing every Saturday for like 5 years in a row, and what I will also be doing tomorrow. UUUUUUUU REEEEEEEEEDS!

  11. Aylesbur Red, The Lady Bay is child friendly – I take my 9 year old in there before most games. Bar,lounge, outside seating and car parking (if you get there early enough).

  12. Leeds, and Bates in particular lied, cheated and lied some more, they deserve nothing other than what they got and i say hats off to the football league for standing up to them in the first place, and secondly making such a solid case that it was upheld at appeal. Its not often we can say well done to the footballing authorities in this country but in this case, they’ve done well, no one else will try that route again.

Also, tradition for last day of the season, you must wear colours, weather forecast looks good so lets see everyone wearing the shirt with pride, older the better, i’ll be wearing the lime green 3rd strip from the early 90’s!

Aylesbury Red, dont go to the Hubble, its standing room only, plus i intend to get there early, have a few beers and crank up the atmosphere to the max before the game, no offence but not the place for a ten year old! i also swear like a trooper, hope you enjoy the supporters club tho.

  13. Thanks very much Lou

  14. And Paul and Dave!

  18. NFFC – Completely unrelated to the big game, I discovered this sad story of Gary Charles on another blog site and thought you might be interested. It looks like Roy Keane has helped him when many others have given up.

  19. Vas, only 1 prob – I’ll be @ work so no net Access, I know all about live scores, Sky, Sporting Life, EP – er, I han’t tried it in ages since I got fed up with the rotten service!!lol.

So, it’s good old radio!!! More reliable than – er, no negativities we said so I’ll drop it 4 now!!!lol again.

So blowing up the phone bill for our beautiful promotion chasing & possibly favourites to go u Reds. Doncasters game & Carlisle’s game can go in any direction so we have to win whatever so @ least we go into the PO (if we go) on a run.

Only a few hours to the big KO….
