Automatic promotion is slip-sliding away..

Crewe Alexandra – 0
Nottingham Forest – 0

Even Jeff Stelling was shrewd enough on Sky to note that a goalless draw at struggling Crewe was not good enough for Nottingham Forest.  He’s quite right – let’s not mention that it was a Crewe side heavily impacted by injury too.  Frankly, I’m pleased I had other plans today so didn’t make the game, nor was around to get frustrated by listening to the match.

The start boded well, a freekick from Sammy Clingan was on target from 30 yards, but straight at the ‘keeper.  Whilst Forest perhaps dominated possession, they characteristically failed to convert this into chances on goal.  Davies had a moment where he beat two men and hit a shot which was deflected away for a corner by a defender at the near post.

After half an hour the home side mustered a chance – Forest deciding not to close down Crewe striker Joe Anyinsah who fortunately shot wide.  Agogo created a great chance for Cohen moments later, laying a ball into the penalty area for the midfielder, but unfortunately Cohen unselfishly tried to find the run of Agogo with a poor cross rather than having a go himself.

Again the second half started with Forest looking positive – Wes Morgan went marauding forward as he does occasionally, and stayed forward a while to try to make something happen.  Agogo headed goalward but was blocked and Ian Breckin of all people was on hand to connect with the rebound, unfortunately putting it just wide.

Agogo controlled well and shot well from 25 yards, which the Crewe ‘keeper did well to save, the resulting corner was nearly a Bohinen-esque goal-straight-from-a-corner, but sadly hit the bar.  A Clingan cross was punched clear by Williams, falling to Breckin whose shot was blocked by a defender as Forest did actually mount something resembling pressure on the Crewe goal.

A bit of silver lining on this cloud of a result was the return of Nathan Tyson, who was introduced for new signing Brett Ormerod (who ominously has escaped mention in the match reports I’ve picked up), although as is our way, it was some time before he was even able to get a touch of the bar. Davies had clearly picked up an injury and was withdrawn for McGugan.

Thornhill was introduced for Breckin as a final throw of the dice by Smoulderwood, but the game was set to peter out with no more chances for either side – leaving us with a measly point when only three would really do.  Meanwhile, both Doncaster and Carlisle registered home wins, as did Leeds and Southend just beneath us.

Were in not for the amusement provided by Portsmouth and Barnsley’s results against Manchester United and Chelsea respectively in the FA Cup it really would have proven a shitty weekend for football.  Once again I find myself stating that without a significant improvement, nay, a dramatic one, we can kiss automatic promotion goodbye – indeed, we could even end up dropping out of the playoffs at this rate!

As one wag on an internet forum pointed out, since Crewe had so many injuries they looked like a reserve team – you’d have to wonder if our reserves would’ve beaten them…  Smoulderwood may say we can still do it, but does anybody seriously believe him any more?

  1. This was a complete shambles! With the recent form of Crewe and the fact they were without 5 of their key players, we still couldnt win. We are simply not good enough and anyone that thinks we will still win automatic promotion, is deluded!

The afternoon was summed by the management when Davies got injured late in the 2nd half – it took a good 7 (yes seven!) minutes to get McGugan on his place. The management of this club simply dont know what they are doing.

With the forthcoming fixtures (Doncaster and Carlisle both away) I will go as far as to say, I doubt whether we will even make the play offs now.

A VERY sad day for this once proud football club.

  2. For God Sake play the Reserves,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  3. How many more times do us fans after say it, get the clown that is Calderwood out of our club now. I am sorry but we are shite.

Lets look at a few stats.

Scored only one goal in the first half of a game once since December, Against Swansea, Donny Carlise and Walsall we have yet to score? hence no wins, No goals against Oldham or Bournemouth, won less than half the games we have played this season, lost two piss poor games to Luton with one of these games giving the winners a chance to Play Liverpool, look at Barnsley……..

Piss poor perfomances against Gillingham, Bournemouth, Swindon and Crewe away……

What more is needed Doughty to realise we are not good enough with this manager, I have said all along we have the players but soemthing is missing and that something is a decent manager, you should have been brave and got rid after Yeovil gate but no you kept him in charge.

Tactics, Team selection and substituions all over the shop, have you ever heard the fans sing CC name? NO.

Give Pemberton ago, he knows what he is doing, look at the reserves, we are pissing it, good attacking football gets you results, not scared of losing, look at Barnsley today, oh how I wished that was us Forest fans on the pitch tonight celebrating, no chance with CC in charge, your little hitler stewards wouldn’t let us on the pitch anyway, that is a story for another day I guess.

Anyway rant over for now, had to get it off my chest, the Mrs is sick of me whinging about how far we have fallen.

  4. Calderwood out!!!!! Should’ve gone after the Yeovil debacle.

Many congratulations to Pompey and the Tykes for their magnificent cup victories today. I watched both games and they were thoroughly deserved. These results have provided more than just amusement , they provide faith for fans of all teams that the ‘big four’ can still be conquered.

  5. Sack cc now!!! and promote John Pemberton to 1st team coach in time for tuesdays game.He knows the players,is positive and is used to winning. We would at least have some hope of making the playoffs. Our reserve team WOULD have beaten crewe reserve team today..Thats sure…..Something has to change NOW !!!!!!!Thats not soon,Its NOW !!!!!!What do you all think????

  6. 100% with you Alan, I am sick of having shite managers at our club, Platt, Kinnear, Megson and Calderwood, why o why can’t we get a decent manager, I say give Pemberton a go, can’t be any worse, at least he knows how to make teams play attacking footy, ie our reserve team.

  7. Yes, CC’s no good at this level – he’s proved that now beyond doubt. But what about the players? Who turned up today? Our heads dropped in the second half, and we weren’t even losing! A sad, sad day. 19 points from our last 12 games – we’ll do well to stay in the top ten at this rate. Carlisle, Southend and Doncaster up in the near future – and they all won again today.

  8. Sounded extremely boring today, yet again no width or invention, i cannot begin to fathom the possibility of not reaching the play-offs, but i guess i should as we may be in trouble. I did not go to the game today but it sounded much like i have seen for a while now, just absolutely no invention in the final third which is not good enough. I have long said the only way to get out of here is to score your way out, and these non-sensical tactics employed by the management are simply not working, simple as! Really disgusted, trying to be positive but Mr B summed it up very well and like i said in my previous post…i am scared! I’m lost as to what to say for encouragement ………. but will continue for the following years unlike CC! We do have the players though, i have no doubt.

  9. Colin this is ANOTHER below par result, sort it out. I don’t know if i want to be promoted with this mug or spend another season in this league with a manager the fans might respect myself included

  10. I wish he would just pay 442, yesterday Davies should have been playing as a winger but was tucked in for the entire first half with Perch playing more as a winger. We huffed and puffed but the movement is so slow and predictable. Loads of possession yesterday as though we were at home but we could not break them down with anything like quality. I am not sure if they are scared, low on confidence, don’t understand what position they are playing, don’t give a shit, don’t understand what he wants them to do, or they just don’t want to play for him and want him out. I really don’t know but they don’t look like a team and they don’t look happy or motivated. Of course you have the likes of Bennett and Morgan that really do give everything and care but the rest…………….something is missing. Calderwood is wrong to think we can go up automatically, were just not good enough. I think we will struggle to get a playoff spot. Even if we do it will be another season in this league but with him.

  11. doh !! last line should read “without him” not “with him” !!!

  12. Yeh – sack CC now! That’ll achieve automatic promotion, of course! It’s such an easy solution, I can’t believe no-one thought of this before?!
Why is it that everyone only goes on the internet to MOAN. Yeh we lost against Carlise but it was a FLUKE goal and the crowed are only 1 bad touch away from turning on the whole team. Can’t you see, this team have all the confidence drained away from them with you’re negative outlook on everything.

“Bah – get the ball down and pass!!!!”
“Bah – hoof it up to Agogo!!!”

You lot can’t fookin’ wait to boo can you? So why don’t you get behind the team and be a ‘supporter’?
So from a collective bunch who think it’s a great idea to boo the team at half time and to sack the manager with 10 games to go, whilst we’re still in the play-off’s, why don’t you keep you’re half-arsed opinions to yourself.

Great blog – keep up the good work.

  13. Spot on Mr B, If they had sent Pemberton up to Crewe with his reserve side, there is no doubt at all he would have come back with the 3 points, makes me think as well we have the “get him out syndrome by the players”

  14. The Anti-Megson are you CC in disguise

  15. It seems we have 2 choices:

1 – fluking our way to the championship under CC and being thoroughly humiliated next season as a result (remember we’ll be playing d@rby if we go up).
2 – failing to win promotion, getting rid of CC and praying that doughty and arthur make a decent choice of a new manager.

Either way the prospects don’t look very good… I can’t say which seems worse. Ideally I’d take promotion, with CC getting the sack, as I think this squad could do good things with a better manager, but how? Any ideas?

  16. I don’t think Doughty will change the manager with 10 games to go. I don’t like CC’s style of football (his prime objective seems to be not to lose) and his formations and tactics are confusing at best. We have to stick with it until the end of the season, I didn’t go to Crewe but surely the players must take some responsibilty yesterday, although emotions run high and we all are passionate about Forest I actually feel a certain amount of empathy for CC right now, on Forest World he looked ill!! and very pressurised. Yes it could be said it is his job and it goes with the territory but I hope evreyone can get behind the whole club for the last 10 games and put all our emotions into supporting Forest and who knows what could happen!! (before the weekend very few would have thought Millwall Portsmouth and Barnsley would all win!!)
    Come on Forest!!

  17. Thanks a lot Anti-Megson, I thought I was alone in my Anti-Moan campaign. And since I am based too far away it was rational to think that no one was taking me seriously.
Mr B, sorry but I don’t really think there IS a “decent manager” in your book. Whoever comes in (even Pemberton whom you guys are idolising at the moment, or good old Charlie McP) you will start booing from the second bad result (if not the first). I am sure that even Paul Hart (the man who took a team in ruins after the Platt hurricane and came just a Des header that went in the wrong net away from the CHAMPIONSHIP playoff final) has been booed out of the City Ground by people who are now moaning on CC’s subject.
CC has made many mistakes, but no one (including himself) has ever said that he was Brian Clough who rose from the dead (and I will keep reminding you that Clough got us promoted only in his THIRD season, and thanks to a result that went our way on the last day, right?). He keeps quite a low profile on himself (remember Megson, his views about himself and his outrage to bring disgusted fans into the locker room to holler at the players???) and he silently admits he is still learning the league (so it’s not his fault that he was hired but probably the top management’s, who were scared to death to give Roy Keane a chance, and look what he’s achieved with Sunderland). Maybe Northampton fans will tell you now that they are “glad they got rid of him”, but at the same time they are enjoying life at League One aren’t they??? This is what in my own book is called hypocrisy and ingratitude.
I have read all kinds of stuff here. You people think that you know the players better than their manager for God’s sake. Maybe some of you are in training every day, maybe also they have found a way to sneak into the dressing room and the physio room all the time. Some suggested that Chambers is a centre-back and should play there instead of full back. Yeah, right. Maybe it’s you that managed him for two years in Northampton and then brought him to Forest.
We were all disappointed by the Yeovil crash last season BUT it’s no CC’s fault if our beloved Wes gifted a goal to Yeovil is it??? Or that David “King of Idiots” Prutton got sent off in a moment that the team was struggling for a veteran’s experience and composure? (By the way for what he has done I hope Leeds don’t get their bloody points back and he stays in the same shitty division for another year!) Of course all that WOULD NOT have happened if CC had not drawn Lester out of the game, says your crystal ball. And under which manager did Forest win 2-0 at Yeovil if I might ask?
I am sorry guys, I share your disappointment as a Forest fan for more than 30 years now, but please save your anger for after the end of the league. On my first ever visit to the CG years ago, we looked like complete shit and lost 2-0 to Bolton, but I was so pleased to at last see my Forest playing that it hasn’t ever crossed my mind to boo a player in the Garibaldi. Maybe I’m crazy, maybe I’m too romantic, but I feel I’m not the only one. And again, thanks “Anti-Megson” for your support.

  18. And lest I forget: COME ON U REDS for ever and ever!!!

  19. Despite a lot of good comments I still think giving Pemberton the opportunity to manage the 1st team squad until the end of the season would give us a better chance of promotion and meet with the approval of the majority of Forest fans.Come on you REDS !!!!

  20. Fair play alan wood, but let’s not forget that reserves always play free of any pressure whatsoever (except maybe players fighting to make their way back into the 1st team after injury), and no one is ever going to moan if they don’t finish 1st but 12th – so it’s easier to perform especially against players of their age. And correct me if I am wrong but I think Pemberton has no experience so far in pro football management?

  21. I can uderstand pressure at the CG can affect some players, and I do not agree with booing at all during the game, but the away performances are not good ,that cannot be because of the fans on their backs, it is about lack of motivation, poor tactics, players in the wrong positions, the lack of any organisation whatsoever, if we put in a half of the effort, and were organised any where near what Barnsley were with the players we have we would be in the top two

    Come on you Reds

  22. Good point Vassilis,I guess my nerves can’t take another play off scenario and cc is tactically so naive. I hope as we all do that cc proves us wrong.

  23. How we can we turn the emotion (postive and negative) and spirit into a real togetherness for the last 10 games, all of us want Forest to do well. Lets get behind everyone at the club and give 100% support from the last 10 games and see what happens.
    Come on Forest!!!!

  24. Deep depression, though I’m trying to keep the faith. I thought the previous loan signing looked excellent before getting crocked. I’m less sure about ormerod as he’s not been prolific of late, and unless he hits the ground running, by the time he’s settled in we will have bore drawed our way to sub play-off obscurity.

Ominously, leeds are getting close to the play offs, and with forest form about as consistent as a newcastle defense, its hard to stay smiling.

As for solutions, we have to try something different to usual, as the usual repertoire ends in league 1 (again). Tyson on the wing (as per the best game of his career against charlton), 4-4-2 with Agogo and Ormerod, and pray like crazy.

When it all gets too much, remember: Stats prove that Derby have the worst attack, and the worst defence, of ANY TEAM in the whole of english league football – 🙂

  25. WHY ARE WE WAITING ?

GO GO GO, JUST GO CC, GO GO F**KING GO.

  26. Despite what one or two of you on here seem to think, not all of us boo the team when things go wrong.
But nffc has allowed us a platform on here to comment, and for me it’s a godsend. Now I can moan and groan to myself in my study and get it off my chest!
You guys who moan about the negative comments must surely realise why we grumble? You can’t be so blinkered? Calderwood plays players out of position, is unable to inspire his “group” (I hate it when he uses that word after another defeat), and consistently fails to entertain the very supporters who pay his wages. (Please dont pick me up on that last bit, allow me to believe I am the customer and he is giving poor service).
I am not expecting miracles, but an average manager with this squad could comfortably be top 2.
I dont know who could come in and do better, but for sure they wouldnt need time to rebuild the side, its there already…at least CC got that right.
One thing I know for certain, if CC is still here at the end of the season we will be starting next year in this shite division again, with a new manager, average gates of 12000, half the best players in the league gone and a very bleak future ahead of us.

  27. To mr anti megson please go with mr calderwood when he goes because what you wrote was absalute drivel we are crap did calderwood pay you to write that the man is useless, and if you cant see that by now your as daft as he is.There is nothing good you can say about the way forest play yes it was a fluke goal that forest gave away against carlisle but we didnt win when we should have. tell me how many games have you really been to see that have truely convinced you that we are good enough under calderwood ? look who we are playing against we are in the 3rd division and will remain there untill we have a manager that knows what he is doing i rest my case

  28. You are spot on Terry – we have only looked good in one home game this season and that was when the players felt wronged after Wilson’s sending off against Huddersfield. Or was it because that is the only game all season where the crowd have been 100% behind the team for the entire match (well, the last hour of it after the stupid red card). We’ve had spells in other games but for virtually all of them, we have flattered to decieve. The results against Southend and Leyton Orient were classic examples of this. The second half against Carlisle was a joke – Davies and Commons on the right wing, McCleary on the left and we play the ball through the middle to absolutely noone.

I think the trouble with the team is that we’ve never had a spell where 3-4 players have all been firing at the same time. Its been a case of Commons playing well OR Agogo knocking in a couple OR Tyson OR McGugan working some magic. We’ve not seen the players ‘click’ or play consistently. That, I firmly believe, is CC’s fault.
