You don’t know what you’re doing…

AFC Bournemouth – 2
Nottingham Forest – 0

Having opened the door to my house at 1am, through various convolutions in relation to the rail network, I can certainly say I’ve had plenty of time to think.  Indeed, if I’d taken a laptop with me I could’ve had this nailed and got some well-deserved shut-eye instead of reliving the horrorshow I witnessed today at the Fitness First stadium.

There would be little point in detailing the match – because we were absolutely dreadful.  Deservedly beaten by a not-particularly-confident looking home side who grew in stature and confidence as the game went on, and Forest seemingly dug themselves further and further into a mire of ineptitude, lack of effort and utter disregard for the fans.

Smoulds has, to all intents and purposes, lost the fans now – or a decent proportion of them.  The chants directed at him at the end were the loudest I’ve heard so far, and given the fate of recent managers when the fans turn properly, unless he does something I don’t think he’s capable of, I don’t think he’ll last.  Even the team bus had anti-Smoulderwood messages inscribed in the dirt by enraged supporters.

The sad thing is, at the start of the game we approximated four-four-two, and when Tyson had the ball at his feet and ran at the Bournemouth defence, they looked scared witless.  Alas, the infuriting tinkering saw a quick reversion to the ineffective ‘Smoulderwood Formation’ and we lost all impetus very early, and Bournemouth capitalised with two excellently taken goals in the first half.

Kuffour gave us an early warning by spannering a shot wide from 12 yards, another followed when Vokes headed and Smith saved well.  Their left winger had the freedom of the park as Chambers was hopelessly out of position, or easily bypassed (he seemed not to work out the chap was right footed, and always looked to get onto his right foot to cross).

Sure enough, it was a cross from Gradel that gave them the lead – Wilson had let Vokes get enough space in the box to plant a header well beyond Smith into the top corner.  The second goal came shortly after, Holt lost the ball, and Wilson again was given the slip by Vokes who finished emphatically across Smith and into the corner.

It really should have been three-nil at half time too – Gradel once again beat Chambers easily and ambled into the penalty area, with Morgan and Wilson backing off giving him a completely free route to goal.  Fortunately his composure let him down and the shot from a fairly generous angle was well over the bar.

Our only shot on target in the entire game was a weak header from Wes Morgan in the second half.  Really, that’s about all in terms of match action there is worthy of description from our point of view.  We were really as bad as people are probably suggestion in other reports or on the messageboards.

I have a few general observations, though, on a player-by-player basis – which I don’t normally do too much.  Smoulders is (rightly, in my opinion) getting a lot of flack of late, but today I do think the majority of the players also let us down with a lack of composure, and often – alarmingly – a lack of effort reminiscent of the Megson era of dreadful away results.

Paul Smith – couldn’t really prevent either goal, made a save when needed – his distribution wasn’t awesome, but when our defenders don’t seek the roll-out, he can’t do it, despite the baying from some of our less-than-patient supporters.

Kelvin Wilson – normally he’s peerless, but was arguably at fault for both goals, nothing like his usual assured self – which worries me deeply because before now he’s generally been Mr Dependable even when those around him are failing us.

Wes Morgan – one of the few to emerge with credit, of course, he was clumsy at times, but that’s Wes.  Ended up up front in spells, and got our only shot on target with a weak header.  Guilty of backing off criminally shortly before half time, but I suppose if he hadn’t the winger would’ve squared the ball to a striker who would’ve scored.

Luke Chambers – awful awful game.  Poor positional play, made a monkey of by the Bournemouth winger time and time again – it is becoming increasingly apparent that this lad is NOT a fullback, alas I can’t imagine Smoulderwood will ever notice this.

Julian Bennett – provided the most amusing bit of the game by performing a Ronaldo-esque flick in order to win a goalkick.  Over-engineered, certainly, but a rare moment of pleasure for Forest fans after a long trip.  Plenty of passion, occasional decent play, a lot of headless-chickening too.

James Perch – a frankly dire performance, sadly.  Whatever confidence this lad had must be shot to pieces now, nothing went right for him today, and Smoulds should’ve withdrawn him as it must have been torture.  What a shame we let Lennon go, eh?  Poor though he was, the look on his face when – upon applauding the Forest fans at the end – the booing raised an octave, was heartbreaking.

Sammy Clingan – won a few balls in midfield, ran around a lot – not a lot he was able to do with absolutely fuck all support from many of his colleagues.  His passing wasn’t the best, but deserves some credit for effort.

Chris Cohen – quiet first half, attempted to take the second half by the scruff of the neck, only for his final ball to really let him down on all but one occasion.

Arron Davies – a moment with Davies epitomised the game for me, he got the ball on the left and was forced to turn back and dribble about 30 yards into our own half.  He got away from his man eventually, but in this time not ONE of his teammates did anything useful to make it easier for him to retain the ball.  Otherwise played out of position mostly, and mostly fairly anonymous.

Grant Holt – started okay in an upfront position, won flick ons (to noone, of course, as they were all in midfield!), then descended into his petulant self sadly, and put in a pretty poor showing where he seemingly successfully undertook a one man mission to lose the ball as much as possible.

Nathan Tyson – worked hard, but looks low on confidence – his first touch was often abysmal.  Looked a threat early doors with the ball at his feet, latterly dealt manfully with hopeless long balls punted to him, but with very little actual impact.  It must have been a frustrating afternoon.  Arguably got away without being dismissed after a late lunge on Warren Cummings, who treated the away end to a spectacular display of playacting to try to bring about the red card.

Emile Sinclair – looks eager, but inexperienced.  Never looked capable of changing the game, but with the limited substitution options available was a sensible addition for the increasingly hapless Holt.

Ian Breckin – brought on as an emergency striker, laughably – although the few touches he had were surprisingly okay, particularly the time he had the ball on the deck.  Too little time on the pitch to make an impact, so can’t be judged harshly on today’s showing.

Given that our stated ambition for the season is promotion or nothing, and given that I cannot envisage Smoulders delivering this, I find myself reluctantly siding with those who would welcome his removal from the helm.  Part of me thinks that he should get ’til the end of the season – since sacking a manager now is unlikely to achieve much, given the lack of transfer opportunities, and the message it sends out to how tough the job is.

On the flip side, the impetus that you can get with a new manager could be enough to restore our promotion hopes – given that some other results went in our favour today – and of course, having somebody who will pick our best players in a sensible formation, in their proper positions, would be a huge help in achieving results.

With no disrespect to Bournemouth, who ran out deserved winners today, Forest shouldn’t be making things so difficult for themselves in games like this.  If you had told a neutral that this was a game between 23rd and 3rd (or whatever our starting positions were), then they would have assumed that Bournemouth were the promotion chasers, and would have marvelled that there was actually a team in the league worse than Forest.

I found myself questioning the endorsement of removing the manager, then looked at the fixtures – can you really see us picking up points on forthcoming away trips to Leeds and Carlisle?  No?  Neither can I – that’s why with Smoulderwood at the helm I cannot see us attaining promotion this season.  Depressing, eh?

Sorry, that turned into quite a long rant.

  1. I agree with most of this, especially the views on removing CC. I would also like to point out that Holt’s performance was one of the worst I have ever seen from a striker. Cohen was by far the stand out on effort alone and showed that given the opportunity could be a huge player for us.

  2. Who could be an alternative to calderwood??Bring back Paul Hart !!!!! Anyone else??

  3. Whats happening down there at the City Ground? How is it that we can’t attract a decent manager? When we do get a so called up and coming manager they seem to flop? Not much to celebrate at the moment as a Forest fan. Past glories aside we shouldn’t be in this league. We deserve to be in this league admittedly but we shouldn’t be here. Poor old Cloughie must have his head in his hands upstairs.

  4. Speachless!!!!!!

Bring back Agogo, play 442, attack from the off, Pearch never allowed to play midfield AGAIN!!!(How can any one consider that he is capable)????

Oh and lets hope and cross our fingers we get into the play offs!

  5. 16 Points from 36, shite away form, can’t score, played a shite Bournemouth side twice this season an not scored.

Like we didn’t score against Swansea and Oldham in both games. I thought Megson was negative but this guy is taking the biscuit.

Players out of position, tatics all wrong, formations all wrong, squad looking wafer thin.
Football is a simple game so why do we have managers that make it look so hard.

We are Nottingham Forest, we should be going to grounds and ripping teams apart, especially in this league and when your manager had spent a shit load of money in the summer. However we worry more about the other team than they do about us.

We don’t go up this year then the likes of Tyson, Cohen, Commons, Wilson maybe Smith, Agogo will be off, we will be in alot worst state than we are now that is for sure, the attendences are already falling and if they fail again this year I honestly think they will be lucky to get 10,000 next season.

At the end of the day, who can blame us fans, we have supported them through thick and mainly thin over the last few years and now enough is enough. I for one don’t look forward to saturday afternoons anymore, and for a team that I have in my blood, that is a sad state of affairs.

Please Doughty, listen to us fans before it is too late.

  6. where was Commons yesterday by the way ?

  7. I have nailed my colours to the “cc out” mask for a long-time but the last time it was megson part of me felt and rightly so the players just stopped playing for him. We have now ( even with no new signings ) the best squad in the league on paper. that’s the problem they are not performing, why ? cc ? they are not happy ? they just don’t want it as much as other teams ? no additional competition for places during the transfer window ? I don’t know, but i do know if we get rid of CC there is chance that within a period of time we will be in the same position again. I think we really needed a new signing / signings to freshen it up a bit. Now we need to look at loans. Two points now from a possible twelve is not promotion or even playoff form. so we need to do one of the following:
A, get rid of CC and hope the new guy can kick start the players into performing to a level that is acceptable or even higher!!!
B, keep CC get behind him and make it clear to the players they cannot dictate who and how long the manager of NFFC is.
C, keep CC, get behind him, sing his name loud and proud!! cheer the players every pass, sing their names and make them feel like kings and hope they then decide to make an effort !!
one of the above has got to be better than where we are today.
i cannot stand another year in this league !!

  8. Redash, i don’t think i have heard Forest fans ever sing calderwood name???? No way am I starting now, if fact no way am I going to watch this shite of a club whilst this man is still in charge

  9. Mr B,
so option A for you then ?

  10. I firmly believe that we should get rid of CC and get Billy Davies or Sade in as a replacement. However, I am 100% sure that this will not happen as ND will wish to stick with CC. Comments please.

  11. Sorry that should read Slade!!

  12. Rob, I think Sade would be a good option anyhow – she could sing to the team! That would have a better result than having Blunderwood in trying to get the best out of them…

  13. I’m now in the shite. I’ve just given the biggest ever rant to my wife & inlaws about the state of NFFC (prompted by my Chelsea supporting mother in law grumbling about their 1-1 draw at Pompey yesterday!) I was then presented with my birthday present consisting of a corporate hospitality package to the Swindon game in two weeks…………………….I honestly don’t know what to say anymore about Forest. Sinking fast, but even the band have stopped playing.

  14. Shaun, At least in the corporate you’ll be able to drown your sorrows without having to endure the challenge of getting a pint at half time in the main stand. It’s scant consolation, but every little helps.

Did anyone hear the radio nottingham interview? Was it the usual “Well, 0-2 at bournmouth Colin, not much more we could have done, we were unlucky, take some positives, can i lick your ass please colin as trust we we don’t want to upset you colin”

    What a weekend?

  15. Really glad I went all they way down there, now. Didn’t realise Bournemouth was actually in France. What a long way to go to watch my team play shite – I look forward to doing it again next year – because there’s no way we’re going to stay in the top six at this rate. Walsall, Tranmere, Carlisle, Orient, Southend, and of course Doncaster (who deserve second spot) are all on better form that we are. Thankfully Leeds are also taking a nose-dive, so they are not closing the gap, otherwise we’d be looking at a finish outside the top ten. Great.

  16. ANYONE HEAR WHAT WAS WRONG WITH COMMONS ? – I HEARD A RUMOUR HE’D HAD A FAMILY BEREAVEMENT ?

  17. Memo: Next home game will someone write on a big sheet: 4-4-2 and put all the players in their correct positions as to give big C*** C*** a little advice. We all know he needs it!

Good shout for Billy Davies! He would happily manage us as he might still have his house in the area and whoever takes the job on is on a win win situation.

  18. Rob, I’ve heard rumours of a bereavement Commons has suffered… I haven’t commented on it as it doesn’t seem appropriate, naturally my thoughts are with him though.

  19. How long has Calderwood got left on his contract? Did we give him a 2 or 3 year contract? It’s probably not 2 as there would be a lot more chat about it, but it would be great as the compensation if he got fired would be minimal!

  20. For me, the only question is who will be this seasons Yeovil (if we actually make the play offs that is).

Anyone else see Leon Best on The Championship this morning? He scored 2 and set the other 2 goals up. I bet he saw our result and thought ‘thanks f*ck I didn’t go there!’

  21. N.Ireland, I’m guessing but no doubt Arthur gave CC a nice long-term contract. Well, it’ll have been part of the 5 year masterplan to get into the premier league (yes, I WAS serious about promotion Mark, pity you failed to do your fucking job effectively). When did that 5 year plan start, by the way?

    I have 3 sons.
My 11 year old is going to carry on going with me to the end of the season, but wants to go to our local UCL team next season if CC is still in charge. (i told him if CC is still with us in 4 years thats where we’ll be anyway).
My 9 year old doesnt want to go anymore because we’re rubbish and its boring.
My 4 year old thinks that Basil Brush should be the manager.

Who suggested Billy Davies? Good call, that….

  22. Redash is spot on with the three choices we have. Can’t someone talk to the players when calderwood is not around and ask THEM what is going on!!!!Do they watch a team like Arsenal at man city and look at the workrate, accurate passing, running off the ball, and total determination to collect another 3 points. Why can’t that video be shown to the whole Forest team and ask each one individually what they could learn from it!!Am I the only one who thinks like this or is calderwoods brain somewhere else…This team Is capable of beating any team in this league.A sports psyciatrist would sort them out …if they had an open mind. If I was Doughty I would try ANYTHING !!!!!!!

  23. Yes, after the transfer fiasco and yesterday’s spineless Groundhog Day performance, Im with NFFC, CC OUT!

Im afraid my patience has been exhausted and I’ve totally lost faith now, Looking back over 43 (yes 43!) seasons supporting Forest I think I’ve reached my lowest point. I’m not quick to judge or rush to persecute managers, but enough is enough.

CC seems unable to motivate the players to play to their potential and we seem to have a group of talented individuals BUT not a team. Its simply not good enough!

After the match yesterday, when asked (AGAIN) on Radio Nottm about loan players coming in, he gave some BULLSHIT answer and totally avoided the question. Me, well I’d rather hear the truth, even if its not palatable rather then be treated like a moron.

Something needs to be done quickly to avoid total meltdown but I’m sure it wont. Oblivion and total obscurity will follow shortly……….

  24. Top on christmas day – cold turkey ever since

It seems unbelievable now but albeit fleetingly we sat atop whilst tucking into
our mince pies …..who would have thought the following 5 weeks or so would see
us sink almost out of the automatic race and now only a point or two from missing a play off spot altogether . We may have games in hand but at the present time this is a dubious advantage …what went wrong ? what was the turning point and why are we now looking so crap …… Can anyone summarise ?……as we went one way of course Swansea and Donny have gone the other …. I think CC needs help by the way …he needs us fans to stay with the team …so thats what we will do …but CC please
play your best team and send it out consistently in the same formation …..thats your part of the bargain !
to get behind the team …..

  27. Sorry about that… bring in Billy Davies or (although I don’t like him) Paul Ince would be the ideal choice. He is a born wwinner and will get the best out of this team, we will be a stepping stone for him but who cares, just as long as he gets us out of this league!!!!!!!!!

  28. Since calderwood arrived at forest i never for one minute thought he was the man for the joband the way things are going this season i feel as though i was right. He looks the part in his flash suits but thats it thats where it stops he is negative to the point of being boring has no ideas no insperation and could not pick a winner in a one horse race.We will nort get promotion under him or the crew above him mcarthur and doughty we have gone in to ablivian since they have been at the helm. Please god send us a milti billionair that will buy them out the sooner the better

  29. A shitty game indeed…

On a brighter note though, did anyone see those Forest fans on Sky Sports’ ‘Soccer AM’ on Saturday morning?

When introduced on the show, they sang the ‘number one is Brian Rice’ song.

    Hilarious!

And quite apt really given how badly we went on to play!

  31. Be reet when Junior gets back, comes off the bench and slams in a hat-trick against Dirty Leeds. I get the feeling you lot would still found something to whinge about when we won the European Cup ffs.

We’re a sh!t team in a sh!t league with sh!t players. We’ve been sh!t all season and the only reason we are where we are in the division is because there are other teams who are even more sh!t than we are.

In the Championship, pretty much every team is capable of beating every other team on any given day. In League One, pretty much every team is capable of losing to every other team on any given day.

I’m losing patience with Tyson more than CC. That fella really needs to gain some composure and realise that if you place the ball accurately, there’s more chance of scoring than if you just try and thump it as hard as you possibly can as early as you can.

  32. There are thousands of us looking for an answer.I have supported The Reds since 1957 and saw them win the cup at Wembley.Forest is in my blood, and I couldn”t bear being in this division another year.Whatever the routine is for away games CHANGE IT..It s not working.WHO KNOWS THE PLAYERS PERSONALLY.????Tell us what the REAL reason is for the change in performances..If all the Forest players were told they would be shot dead at 5 pm on the last day of the season if they didnt get promoted and would receive 100,000 pounds each if they did get promoted.Do you think they would damn well make sure they win every game between now and the end of the season !!!!!!!!!!!And they would DO it!!!! It s all in the mind !!!!!!!Its called MOTIVATION MR CALDERWOOD
