Up close and personal with Stan Collymore

collymore_p021.jpgThe Approach on Friar Lane in Nottingham are hosting what promises to be a really interesting and entertaining evening with former Reds striker Stan Collymore on 4th September.  It should certainly prove interesting for the contingent on LTLF who managed to get him to post on their forum recently!

Stan was – certainly for fans of my generation – probably the most exciting player to don the garibaldi, and of course, his life has hardly been dull since he left the banks of Trentside either on or off the pitch.  The evening will be hosted by former Century FM Forest correspondant Darren Fletcher – for more information click the thumbnail of the flyer.

So if the evening tickles your fancy then get your tickets ordered before they sell out – it should be an excellent evening nestled between a trip to Bristol Rovers and the visit of Oldham at the City Ground!

  1. Big Stan. The biggest waste of natural ability of any footballer in recent years. He could and should have had 100 England caps wth his talent. Can you imagine how many questions he’s going to get regarding the best car parks, drills etc ?

NFFC – Don’t forget the first round of the Johnston Paint Trophy on the 5th. I’m telling you, we’re going to win that cup this year, you see if we don’t! I’ve got a feeling in my bones about it. There’ll be no woeful exits to the likes of Woking or cruel penalty shoot defeats. I predict that we will give Accrington Stanley a good beating on the hallowed turf and 40,000 loyal reds will roar with pride as Breckinbauer climbs the steps to lift the ultimate prize in football.

  2. You’re not kidding on the wasted talent front :)

It would be fun to have a jaunt to Wembley for the JPT, but I wouldn’t lose any sleep if we were once again humiliated by the ‘Who are they?’ team – league’s all that matters to me this season.

  3. There will be no humiliation – the JPT is our destiny. Although I have just thought that if we are in the Northern Section that would rule out playing Podgers boys in the final. Pehaps we’ll get to play tonight’s friendly opponents, Rubbish & Dustbins instead?

Incidentally, I’ve just seen tonights team and Perch has found himself at right back –
Smoulders must be reading your articles!

  4. NFFC thanks for your reply on the last mail. There are certainly a lot of options available in defence which is good (if the tried and tested system is not working with 30 mins to go, then it is ideal), though the really top defences are created through long stints of personnel and formation. Sorry to bang on about the defence but I feel it is the most interesting part of our team this year, as with the midfield and the forwards, I know relationships are important there too, but these positions rely on the personnel to be more on form than the defence. The phrase which vacates me which would easily describe what I mean to say (something along the lines the sum of a unit adds up to more than what they would be individually). At centre half is where I see it being most interesting as breckin is a definite starter as you could not play all our young guns at one go as there would be no experience, and the other birth will go to chambers(good and steady, similar to breckin)/ Wilson (compliment chambers and brecks well with pace and maybe come out of defence with the ball), but I do think for the up and coming season that morgan is going to be 4th choice bar cc playing a back 3. Now I do plead ignorance here as I am a native of the giant killing N. Ireland and do not get to see many games, but big wes is the less talanted brother of titus bramble and has never filled me with confidence (poor positional play and prone to the odd clanger). Now NFFC with you being that bit more enlightened on the subject do you feel I am getting totally wrong or have I hit the nail on the head? ps with the amount I write I could be a correspondent for you! Cheers

  5. Haha.. feel free to carry on your missives! :)

Big Wes is somewhat an enigma for me. On his day, he is immense, whether he be facing a pacey young player, a big bruiser or a wily so and so like Dean Windass, I’ve seen him shine against them all.

I’ve also seen him have disasters against them all as well – so I don’t think potential is in doubt, but certainly consistencey most definitely is. The best I’ve seen Wes play was when Des Walker was still around – so perhaps he needs someone with a “mouth” on them to tell him what to do? Breckin doesn’t seem to do this much, indeed, for a captain he’s certainly a quiet one.

Chambers potentially has the voice to coax Wes – but will his lack of experience make his advice redundant? Possibly. It’s certainly a conundrum.

As for Breckin himself – I’m not sure he’s as bulletproof as you’ve intimated – he’s looked shaky too lately, and is certainly starting to show his age. That said, he is our best defender aerially, and if he can recreate his lethal form from setpieces then he provides a valuable source of goals too.. but I seriously think this will be his last season for us, so it would make sense for Smoulds to start looking to the future, which he clearly has started to do judging by his signings!

Oh yes, to Aylesbury Red, of course he must take my advice – he’d be a fool not to! :)

  6. Totally agree with you on the wes and des show. That was his best period in a forest shirt, no doubt. Has he gone stale being at the club too long?. In typical forest fashion you would probably see him go to another club and be awesome. Spot on regarding brecks, as I do see chambers taking over the mantle as the season goes on (sorry went over my post again, sounds like I have the hots for him), was just referring to the start of the season. I did mention the two are similar types of centre halfs, but in my opinion chambers is the better player, but it was the captaincy that swayed me. Though what is an armband really, from my knowledge of neil lennon he will be the captain in all but the armband. Good move by cc though not to take it off him as some have suggested as all it would have caused is bad blood for no reason. Lennon’s real value will be more mentally than physically (will provide tempo and help keep the ball with simple passes)

  7. For those of you who have read my views, both here and on my blog (click on my name – sorry NFFC, I always seem to be plugging on here!), I don’t think there is any merit in taking the captaincy away from Brecks. I like Chambers and see him as the next skipper (remember Smoulds made him Northampton captain when he was only 21).

I also strongly believe that Chambers and Breckin is as strong a combination as you will get at centre-half in this division – they both read the game in the same way and therefore I think they cover each other nicely.

I also agree with NFFC and David that Wes is best when he has an old head next to him to yell at him and tell him what to do – for example, Des and even Michael Dawson. Wes can be great, but we have to hope that his new six-pack is matched by a corresponding increase in mental sharpness.

  8. Not really a comment on the Stan thing, more a grumble about about pre-season…(didn’t take long for the moaning!).
Am I correct in thinking we haven’t scored many goals so far?
    That’s it, really.

  9. On a completely different subject, I am starting a campaign to save Sherwood the Bear. Please see http://www.nottingham-forest.blogspot.com for further details and updates.

  10. We are short on goals, but I can’t say I’m losing too much sleep about it – I’m convinced we’re saving ‘em for Bournemouth!

And saving Sherwood? Hmm. I’ll miss the crazy bear, but I’m more concerned with them coming up than a better idea than a man prancing around in tights!!
