Another Holt exit taken for Granted?

No sooner has Gary Holt been released, it emerges today that top scorer and player of the year Grant Holt could be heading in the same direction – although in this case obviously he would command a fee.  It’s been a bitter-sweet season for Grant, he was often dropped or substituted by Smoulds, and even nearly sold at one point, but has probably – thanks to injuries to other strikers – made most appearances up front this season for Forest.

I’m a big fan of Grant.  He’s a bustling and niggly ‘old fashioned’ striker and he’s delivered the goods in a difficult season with practically bugger all service for large periods when we seemed to not have a midfield.  However, and there’s always a however, one thing I would hold against him is his attitude on the pitch – particularly towards the match officials, he really needs to nip that in the bud in my opinion.

My gut instinct suggests that Smoulds is prepared to let him leave, and I suspect Grant will take up the offer as I don’t think the manager will offer him the assurances he seeks about his future with the club.  Carlisle are reportedly ready to make another move for him, and I imagine the move would appeal to Holt assuming they can meet his wage demands – since it’s the area where he’s from.

One thing massively in his favour was his decision not to leave for Bristol City earlier in the season – he could have gone, Forest were ready to sanction it, but he stayed and fought for his place in the side, and even now despite uncertainty clouding his Forest future, he doesn’t claim to regret that decision.  It’s understandable he’s built a solid relationship with the fans, and I’m sure like me most would be sad to see him leave – particularly if, as is a very realistic fear, he is not replaced with quality.

If you are to move on, Grant – then thank you sincerely for your hard work and effort, we’ve had some good moments to celebrate with Grant in a relatively short time with the club.  And if he is to move on Smoulds, I hope you’re not expecting Dobie to weigh in with the same number of goals next season in his place.

  1. Dobie and wier-daley up front next season, I can see it now. They will surely fire us out of this league, NOT

  2. If Calderwood lets him leave to go to another league 1 team he’s an even bigger idiot than I already thought he was. I count the decison to let him leave to Bristol City as bad as the one to let Southall go. Some of Calderwood’s decisons really are baffling.

  3. Funny that most fans would be prepared if not ecstatic for calderwwod to go. Shame he won’t. By only having one forward next year he can play another defender, and we thought Megson was over cautious!

  4. Has he gone then? Big loss if he does. Maybe Colin the cautious has a master plan….
hope he shares it with us soon, before season ticket renewal time.

  5. Grant could certainly do a job for us next year and without his goals this season we wouldn’t have even made the playoffs. I think he would be a loss and would regret to see him leave. On the subject of strikers we haven’t heard anything about Tyson’s future? I know he has been injured and has a lengthy road back to full fitness but surely there are going to be a number of clubs with an eye in him? I also think Dobie is underated. He has had a nightmare with injuries but don’t forget he still relatively young and did a great job at West Brom and Millwall fans think very highly of him. Lets judge him once he has regained his fitness and plays a few games – I think he might suprise a few fans or at least I hope so!?

  6. IF Grolt Leaves, I’ll lay money on us getting relegated.

  7. Smoulds love of Harris divorced him from some fans.
His seeming dislike of Grolt will divorce him from swaiths of fans.
If this goes through CC will already be largely on the back foot with the terrace boo boys next season.
If it doesnt pull off it could spell the end of his job.
He’d better know what he’s doing. For his sake.

  9. Where did this story come from? I don’t doubt your sources nffc, but if this is based on the NEP’s story yesterday, I suspect that it has about as much backbone as a jellied eel…

  10. Oh I’m only commenting on rumours, not suggesting it will actually happen.

  11. I think we need to get a little bit of perspective here, Grant did a job for us this season and his goals were invaluable but he is the type of striker that can look like a cart horse at times and as NFFC said earlier he seems to have an attitude problem that he brings with him to games.
When he does play he can be effective but I think his presence on the pitch encourages our defenders to hoof it long to him – a tactic that you boo boys are so fond of ! Also, as with Jack, how much will he play with Agogo, Tyson and Dobie plus SWD all fit ?
So If he was to leave, I would say thanks and good luck Grant.

Dan – I will gladly take your bet if he leaves.

  12. I’ll be sorry to see him go – if indeed he does!

Yes he’s not exactly abundant in finesse but he works his arse off for the cause and hes as NFFC described him – a niggly “old fashioned” striker. If he stayed then I’m sure he would do a job for us next season – maybe not guaranteed a definite starting place but certainly a place on the bench.

I certainly dont think he’s endeared himself to CC as why else would he entertain a move to Brizzie mid season??? Makes me think CC is sure hes going to hang onto Agogo and Tys.

Anyway Grolt, if this is goodbye, good luck and thanks for all the effort!

  13. Well, once again I’m in the minority, but I would gladly let Grolt go. Yes hew was our top scorer, but most of his goals were scored in the ifrest half of the season and he was usually appaling in the latter half of the season. If he plays like his recent form next season, then he’ll be lucky to get half the goals he got this season.

For me, we could definetly get someone better for the same money.

  14. Past fucking caring anymore

  15. I think it makes total sense to get rid of Grolt. It follows on naturally to our new policy of releasing our best players ( Jack Lester ).

With Kris Commons looking like he’s on the verge of a big money move to, erm, Burnley, it means we no longer need worry about all this promotion nonsense. Instead we can entertain ourselves with a gripping relegation battle with Walsall instead!

Mercifully then there will be no more cruel hopes of Wembley shattered by comedy own goals and backpasses, just a good old fashioned proper relagation battle which I’m sure we’d all agree would save us alot of heartache.

  16. Aylesbury Red – that is such a negative view – have you been to the Smoulderswood School of Positive Thinking?

    You’re probably right though…

No. For my money, we’ve got some good players who could go on, but we need a clean sweep. Jack’s OK – but a diver; Grolt is a diver and moaner; Commons is fat and lazy; Wes is…Wes; Gary Holt is OK, but negative. Most of the rest of the first team can go, too. We can get their equal in this league – and for less wages per week, too. Let’s have some youth in, and see what happens.

We might like it in league 2…

  18. A word from the wise…Grolt and Commons both already good as gone.

  19. Bloody hell. They’ve dropped the season ticket prices!!!

  20. Does that mean all the boo boys who had been promising to stay away will be back ?!?!?!

  21. Hi Jim. Photos i received. Thanks
