Psycho for manager – surely tabloid bollocks?..

Both the Mirror and News of the World ran claims that Forest were ready to approach Stuart Pearce to become Forest manager, despite overlooking him previously.  Given that Doughty has already publically backed Smoulders (I know, I know, the dreaded ‘vote of confidence’ and all that), and Pearce is currently still managing the England U21 team, I think this seems somewhat a flight of fancy.

That said, if you wanted a conspiracy theory you could probably find one, given that there are a lot of disgruntled fans out there, some of whom questioning the decision to renew their season ticket or not, what a way to appease them!  I think if Pearce were unveiled at the club you could add a significant number to season ticket renewals – even if the club (and they probably will) enter another public relations gaffe and put the prices up again.

As for what I think, well, I’m not that convinced by Pearce as a manager.  It’s true that at Manchester City he was in the Premiership circus, which is very different to this level – but nonetheless, the complaints that the City fans would have were that he was over defensive with no apparent knowledge or willingness to attack teams.  Hmm.  Sound familiar?  Wouldn’t it be horrible for him to come here and fail?

I’m pretty confident this story has no legs anyway – Pearce has claimed to have applied for the vacant job at Forest before, and not even had acknowledgement from the board.  Doughty denied he’d ever even applied.  Now I know who I believe, but that means either one of two things, Pearce applied and was discounted straight away given his relationship with the fans would undermine the board, or, Pearce didn’t actually apply for the job at all, but says he did infront of Forest fans because he knows “it’s what we want to hear.”

I of course don’t think that Pearce is that devious or dishonest, as much as I don’t think he’ll ever be the manager of Nottingham Forest.  It would, I admit, certainly be interesting if I turned out to be wrong!

  1. Who cares?

I’ve had it up to here with them all.

My season ticket money will be better spent taking the family to Center Parcs for the week.

Sorry, but it’s been shit for the past three years and I really can’t get excited about it.

  2. Whoever we get in won’t change a bloody thing, same chairman and same cheif exec.

They live in cloud cookoo land. I have the same opionion as Patrick, I can’t get excited about it anymore, I used to enjoy going down to watch Forest but now it is a chore.

We have no player who makes you sit on your seat or any player you would go upto to ask for an autograph.

    Sums it all up really

  3. I know exactly how you both feel :( I’m still undecided about whether or not to spend so much time focusing on them next season in the form of this site, we shall see. I have enjoyed it and had good feedback, but it’s no fun reliving tiresome games just as it’s no fun going to them in the first place :(

  4. It’s a shame you feel like that mate, I have enjoyed reading and commenting on all things Forest. I can’t blame you though mate.

I won’t be going to watch them next season because it is far too painful and expensive to watch.
Maybe I will get the buzz back in a few years but I think it is now time for NFFC to win back the respect of its fans.

  5. No more season tickets for me an the kids, might do the odd game if the weather is good and theres nowt on the telly…………. Bollox – I know it’s not true we will be there what the hell else are we going to do on a Saturday – take the missus shopping ? I can’t afford that. What really gets my goat is I just dont trust this lot in charge any more. I am so fed up with the whole thing I am confused what I will do – lets see what happens August/September !!!!!

  6. Let’s be realistic here – all the major mistakes happened nearly a decade ago when Platt arrived – the downward spiral since can be traced back to that with a few minor mistakes and over-sized ego’s thrown in along the way. The last two years have been difficult – the reality is, L1 is a tough league to get out of and having the most expensive team doesn’t necessarily make it easier. Last year we cleared out some egos, this year we developed some youngsters and only just missed out. Next year, we’ll no longer be the ‘big team’ in this league – that will be Leeds; we’ll only have players that want to prove themselves, we can’t be so unlucky with injuries and smoulders will be a year better….Smith, Bennet, Breckin, Morgan, Perch, McGugan, Clingan, Bastians, Maloney, Agogo, Holt, Tyson…. it’s not all doom and gloom. My prediction – promotion clinched in early April; title by end of April.

  7. Rubbish.

Me and you could have pissed this league if we were joint managers.

And charging less for our services than “Mr Cautious” Calderwood.

  8. You get what you deserve in life. Actually thats crap, we as supporters didnt deserve that. Calderwood HAS to go. He has proved time and time again that he is unable to motivate the players, he has been tactically inept most of the season, and he has lost whatever respect he had (from me, anyway).
Now I know that we’ve had crap luck with injuries, but the team that started on friday was skilful enough, experienced enough and had the young players with the desire to play at a higher level in it. So why on earth did we sit deeper and deeper and fail to get tackles in (Mr Curtis you should be ashamed). We all knew that to get to wembley they had to score, so why let them come at us?? Why didnt we take it to them??
For christ sake we have just finished 4th in the 3rd division and been thrashed by a team who only a few seasons ago weren’t even professionals!!!!

I can take a few crap performances a season, even the odd tanking. But we have been hammered far too often this season for me to consider 5 season tickets again while Calderwood remains in charge. (yes mark arthur, family of 5, and i doubt we’re alone).

I’ll always be forest, but good luck chaps, you’re gonna need it.

  9. I gotta say I have reservations about Psycho too. Man City havent played great football, his signings have been a bit dodgy and like you say, it would be just shite for him to come back and fail. I think he needs to earn his spurs in management. He should take up a lower division team like Paul Ince and Chris Casper.
Hang on, we ARE a lower division team!
I’d prefer Brain Laws right now to be honest.

  10. This season was the final straw, both me and the wife will not be purchasing a season ticket, I’d sooner spend my money on something worth while.

Calderwood was way out his depth when taking this job, and Doughty was a fool for employing him.

We have lot’s to look forward to, rubbish!

This club in simple terms is a joke!

  11. Yep, you are right about psycho, but lets face it he isnt going to be any worse as manager than calderwood. and if he came i may just re-new my season tickets cos i reckon we wouldn’t just give up like this season. And another thing, we got relegated with a certain Mr Clough in charge, but he’s still a legend and will go down in folklore (ok ok, 2 european cups helps!), but i reckon pearce has as much respect from anyone who ever saw him play.

  12. Ps, are the club now regretting not taking a punt on roy keane….

  13. It might be quite interesting to have an “are you going to renew?” type topic, where people can post their decision and reasons, as well as factors that might make you change your mind.

If there was a sufficient response I could email it to the club.

  14. hope its true but i somehow doubt after Doughty called CC a ‘good manager’, we can dream on

  15. I agree with NFFC thoughts on a renewal Poll, My mood may soften but unless we see either a change in management or, some new signings of some quality, I will not renew but will instead pick off the home games I fancy…lets be honest I will still be able to get my season ticket seat as I can’t imagine it selling to a new season ticket holder after this last season.

  16. Ok,the current situation is dire, more so than ever, after 21 yrs of following forest never have i been so depressed, from the final of 91 to the glimpse of promise of the mid nineties to this, its crazy the level of decline.I am fairly sure Mr Clough is looking down from them clouds he mentioned”where grass would be”, watching the other night the passing game seemed to have been thrown away also.On to the slim possibility of Mr Psycho Pearce of the good old days returning, this would in my opinion at least improve morale in the club and certainly with the supporters.I think there needs to be more optimism of this possibilty and do understand that people do not want him to fail but cannot think that way as we have had too much of that negativity up to now.Man city were awful, the arrogance of the club makes me sick, where did they exactly think they should of finished in the league and how do they truely believe thay deserved to do any better when they failed to support the club financially. The players wre inconsistent(sounds familiar my forest warriors!) and were just not good enough to play in a league full of global celebrities.Arrogant!”we should of done better”,”why are we losing?”,”why cant we score?” Money boys,Money!PEARCE for forest is a thought i can get used to,Calderwood to me is too conservative,we need grit and determination, the desire to win,and all importantly some cash for a decent goalscorer who can provide on a more consistent basis(is mr doughty still skint?),is it me or did we seem to play without our best attackers for most of the season,or a different one for most games?INCONSISTENT!!!! I WONDER WHY.Oh yes one more thing ALAN WRIGHT??????????????????????????????? MY GOD!I THOUGH HE PACKED UP YEARS AGO.Short arse,i am sure he played for villa in the 70′s!Still had no hair then.

  17. I would love to see Psycho here as Forest manager. He knows what it is like to play in a good team, and we all know he’s no quitter. The buzz around the place would lift the whole team…..

Trouble is, why would he want to? We’re a third division club, and he’s an ex-premiership manager. Could he make our players play better? Could he instill some fight into them? Can he sell our entire first team outfield players and buy in new ones?

I would hate to see him fail here as manager (his last spell was not a failure in my eyes). He is a real hero here, and it would be shocking if he fell from grace at a club he served so well. But I don’t belive that would daunt him – he’s not run scared of anything yet. I’m sure he wants to prove himself after being sacked – but would he come down this far in order to prove his abilities?

I’d love to see Nigel Clough here too, but I get the impression he’s very happy where he is.

I am not looking forward to next season at all. More punt-the-ball-upfield-for-Agogo-to-chase, the only tactic Calderwod has. Oh no, there’s a second one. It goes like this: One nil up after 60 minutes? Take off the goalscorer and a midfielder, and bring on two defensive players. Can anyone tell me statistically, how many times that happened this year?

  18. What is the Nottingham Forest? Where is it?

  19. “I did not want to see Forest decline any further, both in terms of its competitiveness and its links with the community it represents,” NigelDoughty, 1999.

  20. I think its time to ask mr Doughty to sell up and do one.For sail one football club fantasic surport and the bones of a good side, some dead wood to get rid of. …. you think im daft well wolves have pulled it off
time to clear the lot out, start again from top to bottem get rid of all the “hangers on” bring in so new blood, people who are proud to pull on the famious red shirt and turn the city ground into
that feard ground of champions. oh well one can dream!!
