Forest-inspired music: part three

nottmforest_cloughvenners9.jpg

Take yourself back to 1991, the mighty Nottingham Forest had reached the FA Cup final to face Terry Venable’s Tottenham, and indeed, the mesmerising Paul Gascoigne on what was - at that time - our annual trip to Wembley to sing for Brian Clough’s army. I seem to recall there was some kind of bland official type song that was released to commemorate this occasion - this track was a rather less than official one.

Simply entitled ‘Brian’ - it is very much centred around the fact that our charismatic leader had every piece of silverware going except for the FA Cup, which of course was ever to elude him. Whilst it lacks in musical dexterity or verve, it does have a certain charm - of course, it also has the lyrical genius of “Gazza get your hankie out, it’s Forest all the way!” - unfortunately Gazza would only have had a blub about having to leave the field early thanks to injuring himself (damn you, you coward, Roger Milford!).

So, I’m proud to bring you ‘Brian‘ by ‘Fat and Frantic‘ for your listening pleasure!

‘ode up a minute! Derby dropped into the playoff places tonight! That should be your headline for today - we could still be beating the sheep shaggers next season yet!

  2. nffc Says:

Feh, write about the sheep botherers or a piece of musical wonder about our hero?

Tis for sure good news though, particularly since the same result also kept Leicester nicely close to the relegation zone… but hardly worthy of more words than that, is it?

Lol, now that you mention it, no it isn’t. Oh well, stick with the comedy cheese :)

On this subject does anyone remember a track recorded by the Sultans of Ping FC called Give him a ball and a yard of grass (or something like that) which was a tribute to Nigel Clough when he was with Forest. It would be late 80’s I guess

  5. nffc Says:

Yes! I seem to recall it was issued as a flexi-disc on the front of the Tricky Tree fanzine… could be wrong.

I’m struggling to remember whether there were two songs (give him a ball & a yard of grass - as I always thought Cloughie was talking about Robbo with that quote, and then a second about “a nice young man with a lovely smile”).

I forget - I shall investigate though. I’m 99% sure, sadly, that neither track if two exist are present on my cheesy Forest compilation though. Although if I can find them I will certainly share them!

Give Him A Ball (And A Yard Of Grass) was indeed a Nigel Clough inspired track by Sultans Of Ping FC and is track 7 on their album “Casual Sex In The Cineplex” (which contained Sultans Of Ping’s biggest hit “Where’s Me Jumper?”.

A live version is avaialable on You Tube on the following link

    Lyrics:
Give him a ball & a yard of grass
He’ll give you a move with perfect pass
Give him a ball & a yard of space
He’ll give you a move with godly grace

He ’s a nice young man with a lovely smile

A man can’t have no greater love
Than give 9O minutes to his friends

If God meant game to be played up there
He would’ve put goal posts in the air
If God meant game to be played up there
He would’ve put goal posts in the air

If God meant game to be played up high
He would’ve built pitches in the sky
If God meant game to be played up high
He would’ve built pitches in the sky (Die!)

We may just recognise some of these words!! God bless you Cloughie.
