Thommo is back at the City Ground..

John Thompson has been recalled early from his extended loan at Tranmere Rovers, which is a bit of a surprise.  The Irishman has impressed at Prenton Park during his loan spell, playing largely in a fullback position – the position in which he first appeared in the Forest side before diversifying into central defensive and defensive midfield roles for the senior side.

Tranmere will be undoubtedly disappointed, as I’ve read some really positive comments from the manager and fans alike; and given the early nature of his return perhaps this heralds a rethink from Smoulders as to his lineup – which is a difficult change to call since Thompson is so versatile – could he wish to deploy him as a fullback and return to a more conventional back four?  Is he eyeing him up for a role in midfield?

Who knows; but it will certainly have a few Forest players looking over their shoulders and wondering whether their place is at risk to the returnee – particularly given a couple of poor performances, with some shambolic defending antics.  We shall see – the Crewe lineup should be an interesting one!
