Gillingham – 0
Nottingham Forest – 1
Forest’s fine away form continued this afternoon, as a 57th minute goal for Nicky Southall proved the difference between the two sides – must have been a particularly sweet moment for Southall, returning to his former club. Agogo slipped the ball to Commons whose incisive cross found Southall at the back post with the simple task of sidefooting into the goal at close range to convert the only goal of the game.
The first half sounded positive from the Reds, however attacks soon led to counterattacking from the Kent side, whom I’ve received criticism via this site for referring to as Pikeys (odd, since the Gills fans I’ve seen on their travels refer to themselves as such!), so I’ll call them the Romany folk now! Agogo perhaps had the best chance of the first half, finding himself clean through and putting it over unfortunately.
This will be a pleasing result for Calderwood following last week’s embarrassment, and indeed his post-match comments were glowing with positivity, saying “We got what we deserved today, and we got what we deserved last week”. Gillingham had a lot of corners but perhaps their best opportunity was in the second half when Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu appeared to be brought down in the area by Wes Morgan, but referee D’Urso waved play on presumably with the big Congo striker’s previous diving antics fresh in his mind.
All in all a great result – it leaves us two points clear atop the league, somehow – and five points clear of third place, so all in all, a great day’s work from the reds – and whilst it’s a poxy trophy, hopefully we can make it a double over the Gills on tuesday by beating them in the Johnstones Paint Trophy. You reds!
