When three minutes of stoppage time are announced it’s usually the away team who groan, but Forest seemed spurred on and forced several excellent defensive moves from Tranmere in the dying moments in the top of the table clash. Grant Holt, a second half substitute, forced a save from Rovers keeper Ward shortly before stoppage time, which then saw a 30 yard screamer from Wes Morgan saved – this was flanked by two chances for Ian Breckin, whose first chance cannoned off a defender on the line, and whose second hit the bar. Kris Commons also had a volley well saved – making his first appearance for the club this season.
Forest started brightly, although Tranmere started to dominate the game after the first 20 minutes, but rarely created direct chances – Gareth Taylor had a chance with a stooped header, but nothing clear cut. They started the second half dominating also, pegging Forest back but the defence held firm – and interestingly Julian Bennett, who I think has struggled lately, kept Shuker very quiet on the right – and Shuker’s a player who has caused us nightmares before!
Calderwood again introduced positive substitutions by introducing Grant Holt and Kris Commons, and later Jack Lester – and this started to influence the game back towards Forest, particularly having Commons providing some much needed balance to midfield. Once we start converting the chances we’re creating, or encounter less impressive goalkeepers, we’ll be laughing! A point is a good result at Prenton Park, given that Tranmere had 100% home record – and we’re still top of the league.
