Yeovil Town – 0
Nottingham Forest – 1
It’s funny how you pre-judge places you’re unfamiliar with based on your perceptions of their football team, so it was a pleasant surprise to cross over from scenic Dorset into scenic Somerset and encounter the very attractive town of Yeovil. A bit out of town near an industrial estate you’ll find the ground, which is small but reasonably appointed, fairly new – and modest of facilities, but with a nice feel to it.
The game itself was pretty dire for the most part, I would say Yeovil Town played the better football, without ever having any penetration in the first half. Forest did come close with a close range effort from Jack Lester well saved by the keeper, but it was a half largely to forget as Forest all but laid out the red carpet for the Yeovil attack to waltz through the defence seemingly at will.
There was an improvement in the second half, but we were still pretty shocking at holding on to the ball, and some kind of Mexican standoff had developed between the fans and the team – neither prepared to make the effort before the other showed willing. But, perhaps unjustly, in the final minute a corner was flicked by Breckin and Grant Holt was on hand to bundle it into the net, much to our delirium and Yeovil’s dismay.
As we’ve seen before this season, we’ll play better than this and lose, and Yeovil will play worse and pick up results – their fans must be feeling pretty hard done by given the result, but hell, I’m not complaining! A great day out, good result, a detour to look at the Cerne Abbas giant, and Derby lost as well! Hurrah! If you click to read the full story you can see a few pictures I took of the day…
